Seeking Health Advice on the Internet
There is a wealth of information on almost every possible aspect of health, wellness, medicine and the health care system available on the Internet. Yet there are significant dangers that accompany use of the Internet for medical information and advice. The most valuable information is available from established hospital systems, the Mayo Clinic and the Cleveland Clinic, for example. Another excellent source of health and medical information is the National Institutes of Health.
Far too often people seeking information consult sites that are pushing products, seeking profit rather than the well-being of those who may Google them. Beware always of sites that claim their product is “clinically proven to be effective” or those that cite one or more doctors who endorse the product. There are few, if any, “miracles” to be discovered online, in newspapers, in magazines or on radio or TV.
